Information about CAMBRIDGE It is said that even if you have never visited Cambridge, it has still touched your life. As the place of learning of Darwin, Newton, AA Milne, Wordsworth, Milton, John Harvard and Stephen Hawking, the relatively small city of Cambridge can claim to have influenced our world as much as any of the great capital cities. In 1284 the first college came into being when the Bishop of Ely founded Peterhouse. For over 7 centuries Cambridge has produced some of histories greatest scholars who have gone on to inspire mankind’s rapid development from the Middle Ages, through the industrial revolution and into the Space Age. It is mainly the colleges that make the city so beautiful to the eye. Throughout the centuries, many famous architects and designers have left their mark, and there are few finer sights in this part of the world than the view from The Backs of the colleges lining the banks of The River Cam. One of the stranger sights is to see the students and scholars going about their business in a very traditional way, in the midst of what is actually a city with a very modern heart.
